Why can't people change to what is God's good for them? Jesus knew that people have a tendency to justify themselves. He said, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God" (Luke 16:15). Often, this "self-justification" sickness stands in the way of honest self-understanding. Because people don't understand themselves well enough, they're unable to realize where change is necessary. To change lifelong patterns, we have to understand ourselves better in the light of God's truth. It's difficult to change what we don't or won't understand.
