Dr. Beck's Cognitive Therapy

Dr. Aaron Beck is founder of Cognitive Therapy (CT), a popular school of psychotherapy. According to him, a person's "automatic thoughts" reflect his or her underlying basic assumptions about life or schemas set in the mind. From the vantage point of psychopathology, those "automatic thoughts" often contain logical errors or cognitive distortions because of early childhood or developmental experiences. Such then lead to emotional difficulties and behavioral problems. A therapeutic goal would be to deal adequately with the past, especially with unresolved developmental issues or childhood traumas.
