Can Education Heal You?

This morning,  I came across a newspaper comment of Dr. Antonio Dans of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. He pointed out that no amount of education will result in a change of habits of smokers (nicotine addicts).

Dr. Dans pointed out that even the people (i.e. physicians) who are supposed to advocate against smoking do not practice what they teach. "You just have to go to college of medicine. These are people who studied health for years and they still smoke, they don't exercise and they're still overweight. They don't eat healthy," said Dr. Dans.

Indeed, the solution to smoking or any type of addiction cannot come from information alone. In therapy and counseling, I have yet to see a broken person heal just by mere knowing. Unless something is done to create an internal structure and stability to stick to a recovery process, then the pattern or addiction simply continues on.
