Two Traveling Angels
One night, they stop by a rich family and request for lodging. The family is rude. It sends them to a cold basement space instead of one of the comfortable guest rooms in the house. As the two angels make their beds on the hard floor, the older angel notices a hole in the wall. He repairs it. When the younger angel sees that, he asks the older angel why he repairs the hole in the wall when their hosts have been so unkind, the older angel responds, "Things are not always what they seem."
The following night, after another long travel on the road, the two angels arrive to rest at the house of a poor farmer and his wife. After giving them the little food they have on the table, the poor couple insists that they sleep in their bed so they can have a good rest. When morning comes, the poor farmer and his wife are in much tears. Their only cow, whose milk is their only source of income, is dead.
The younger angel is angry. He asks the older angel, "How could you have let this happen? The first family is rich and has everything but gives us very little, yet you help them. The second family is a husband and wife in poverty who give us everything even with just the little they have, and you allow their cow to die." Lovingly and kindly, the older angel replies, "Things are not always what they seem."
The older angel further explains, "When we stayed in the basement of the rich family, I noticed there was gold in the hole of the wall. Since the couple was so obsessed with wealth and would not share or help people due to greed, I sealed and closed the wall solidly so that they couldn't find it. Then, last night, when we were accommodated by the poor farmer and his wife and while we were sleeping, the angel of death came specifically for the wife. I pleaded mercy and gave the angel of death their cow instead."
Things are not always what they seem.
