If I Can Stop One Heart from Breaking ...

Psychotherapy is the business of seeing people to stop their hearts from breaking.

It’s pretty much what poet Emily Dickinson was saying ...

“If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;

If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,

Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,

I shall not live in vain.”

Sharon sobbed like no other in her life.

In full view before our Skype session, her tears were flowing from a heart so broken.

Over a lost love. A love she ever had in her young life.

As a therapist, I tried to offer comfort, goodness, wisdom.

Such things cannot be faked.

To the degree that I can share Sharon’s humanity ... that I can make my spirit and energy purer ...

I strove to enable words that matter to her ... words to carry even more power to help her start healing.

I prayed for her.

I thought maybe if I did these things she might notice ... even while she only seemed to notice herself.

The next morning, Sharon called. She’s able to sleep after the Skype session.

She read some parts of a book I wrote, mostly many of my blog and FB posts, including a Bible verse.

She seemed to have taken enough dosage of awareness, insight, and comfort to tide her over.

At least to start stopping her heart from completely breaking.

Almost my birthday when I saw Sharon ... my life and times have not been in vain.
