Escape from Freedom

For many, "stubborn resistance" can be so strong. They come for therapy/counseling with good intentions. Then when it works - uncovering and dealing with unpleasant aspects of existence - strong pulls from within them keep them the way they are. They avoid or escape freedom. Even if dysfunctional habits or old patterns have caused much suffering, they are unable to give them up.

A young woman in therapy found out that her family members have a big part in her unprovoked "panic attacks." When her family learned about it, they fought the therapy. They defended, rationalized, projected the problem on the therapy and the therapist. So afraid to risk losing the "comfort" of her dysfunctional family, she notified the therapist to terminate her treatment. The pain of truth and self-confrontation can be too much to bear. In the meantime, the illness grows and she continues to hurt herself and those around her.

"You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? ..." (Acts 7:51)
